PATH (Professional Association of Treatment Homes) contacted Corporate Adventures about designing and conducting customized facilitator training for PATH volunteers. The PATH liaison and the director of Corporate Adventures worked together to conduct a needs assessment prior to designing the training. Corporate Adventures searched for the best trainers and brought in an expert in doing adventure programming with youth from the east coast.
They then formed a cadre of 12 volunteers who committed to eight days of customized facilitator training at Corporate Adventures. PATH volunteers went through both a basic facilitator training course and an advanced skills training course customized to fit both PATH needs and the needs of the PATH youth population.
The volunteer group built a core program for PATH Camp 2002 that proved to be much stronger than past programs. More importantly, issues that had plagued staff in the past, such as staff exhaustion and over-extension, were not present. The knowledge and skills learned have been used in training other staff, foster parents, and even other professionals in our field. According to PATH staff, the assistance of Corporate Adventures has enabled PATH volunteers to take adventure training to levels beyond what PATH had anticipated.
